DCIC Celebrates the Fourth of July 2006 with

Brits And Salsa

We're pulling out all the stops for this year's Fourth of July party - you'll wonder whether independence ever happened as we celebrate All Things British.

Check out our plans for the evening:

I'm delighted to have been invited over there to talk about Great Britain and to join in the 4th July celebrations with you. I have to admit, it does seem slightly odd that on the day you're all celebrating getting rids of the Brits, you've chosen to invite one of them back again, but I'm not complaining - the British rarely do.

I'm really looking forward to my visit, not only for the opportunity of seeing Washington, but also to see how people in America celebrate Independence Day. It fascinates me to know how other countries celebrate their identities because it's something that frankly, we're rubbish at in my country. For example, did you know that in 2007, Great Britain will be exactly 300 years old? No, neither do many Brits.

The thing is, there are no official plans to celebrate this occasion and to be honest, I feel mildly cheated by that. Is this yet another sign of the current identity crisis that appears to be gripping my nation? Well if that is the case, I've decided that I'm not going to stand for it any longer.

So far, I've been willing to overlook the fact that our monarchy is German, our national motto is French and our national animal is from Africa - that's just quirky - but when the people of Britain are denied a legitimate excuse for a party, it's gone too far.

Before Great Britain enters its fourth century, I think it's time that someone reviewed the whole thing to sort out this identity crisis once and for all. That someone is me and I'll be presenting my findings for you in my new comedy show "Mark Allen's Quite Good Britain". Once we've looked at the evidence, we'll then be able to decide for ourselves - is Britain indeed still 'Great' or would 'Quite Good' be more appropriate?

I look forward to performing my show for you and being able to answer any questions. I'd like to pre-empt a couple of those questions already though if I may - no, I don't know the Queen and yes, we do really talk about the weather every single day.

Cheers

Mark Allen

Don't worry, you won't have to! We'll be dedicating one room and a large-screen TV to showing Britain's favorite sport.

What About Salsa Dancing?

Well, it's just not very British, is it? No, not very British at all. But we're Independent now, so we're going to have salsa dancing anyway! (It was either that or tip a few tons of tea into Chesapeake Bay, and we didn't want to alarm the crabs.)

So, later in the evening we'll be playing Salsa music and running our Salsa Dancing Contest, with prizes for the top dancers!
